Best advise I have would be to buy a bass drum, snare, and Hi Hats (stand and cymbals) and learn to groove on that...from there add as you feel comfortable..
Play to a lot of music, it helps build meter and helps to understand time changes and song structure...etc...really...just go for it..have fun and eventually it starts sounding like it should.
